Direct-to-film (DTF) printing offers significant advantages for textiles like hoodies and sweaters. However, these garments have specific requirements regarding temperature, pressure, and material structure. This article will explain the technical aspects of DTF printing on hoodies and sweatshirts to achieve optimal results.
1. Material analysis: Cotton, polyester or blended fabric?
Hoodies are usually made of cotton , polyester , or a blend of both. Cotton is heat-resistant but retains moisture. Polyester is more sensitive to heat and can develop shiny patches ("scorch marks") at excessively high temperatures. DTF transfers work on both materials but require different pressing parameters.
- Cotton: 160-165°C, 15 seconds pressing time
- Polyester: 145-150°C, 10-12 seconds pressing time
- Mixed tissue: Average of the two parameters
2. Surface preparation
Before transferring the design, the fabric should be smoothed with a short pre-pressing process (3–5 seconds) to remove any residual moisture. This ensures that the hot melt powder adheres evenly and the design lies cleanly on the fibers. A smooth surface is particularly important for roughened fabrics (e.g., the inside of fleece).
3. Positioning of the transfer
Hoodies have seams, drawstrings, and pockets that make pressing more difficult. It's best to use a transfer mat or silicone pad to even out any irregularities. Make sure the print area lies flat and even. For chest designs, the design should start 5–7 cm below the collar.
4. Pressing parameters: temperature, time and pressure
The most important factors for perfect transfers are:
- Temperature: Depending on the fabric, 145–165 °C
- Printing time: 10–15 seconds
- Pressure: medium to high (4–6 bar)
After pressing, the film should be removed either by "hot peel" (immediately) or "cold peel" (after cooling), depending on the type. Pressing it again for 5 seconds with silicone paper ensures a smooth, matte surface and better wash resistance.
5. Wash resistance and care
DTF transfers on hoodies are extremely durable – provided they were pressed correctly. For maximum longevity, printed textiles should:
- Wash inside out at max. 40 °C.
- Do not put in the dryer.
- Do not iron over the design.
A proper bond between hotmelt and white layer ensures over 50 wash cycles without color loss.
6. Common mistakes when DTF printing on hoodies
- Too low a temperature → incomplete adhesion
- Excessive pressure → unclean edges or shiny spots
- Insufficient drying → powder remains sticky
